In later years, I would name this collection Excavating the Feminine
because it reflects both my interest in archeology at the time, as well as the act of excavating information about the women that have come before me. The pieces were three-dimensional and high relief in a number of different media. The scale in each piece had a distinct reference to the dimensions of my body. Hence, there were hand held pieces, pieces I could lay in, as well as those that echoed my height. This series was the result of an extended, voluntary foray into Irish Prehistory.

Inside Outside.

Hand-held sculpture.
A beautiful combination of a rough textured outside surface with a glossy interior.
Later I learned that it resembled a geode.

Journey's End.
Copyright 1999- 2006, D. McCarthy.
This 6 ft by 4ft by 8 in piece was constructed entirely from paper with no armature beneath it.

The process of creating it was meditative (and time-consuming), which fit in well with the concept of a spiritual journey, which the boat represents. Click image to enlarge.
No longer extant.
